The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks meet Friday in MLB action from Chase Field. Los Angeles is coming off a series versus the Rockies. LA split the first pair in that set, then on Thursday the Dodgers posted an extra-innings victory. As for Arizona, they played the Braves this week. Los Angeles posted a 5-4 win over the Rockies on Tuesday, but ended up falling 10-5 in the Wednesday game. In the Thursday rubber match, the Dodgers scored four runs over the final three frames in a comeback 10-inning win 7-5. Max Scherzer put up 5.0 innings with five earned on six hits and one walk.
For the starter job in the Friday opener, the Dodgers will send Tony Gonsolin to the mound. In his 46.0 innings this year Gonsolin has 34 hits, 15 earned runs, five homers allowed, 32 walks, 53 Ks and a 2.93 ERA.
Over on the Diamondbacks’ side, they didn’t have much luck versus the Braves this week, losing the first three games 11-4, 6-1 and 9-2. In the Thursday matchup, Arizona bagged five runs in the bottom of the seventh on the way to a 6-4 win. Madison Bumgarner had 5.0 innings with three earned on five hits and two walks in the start.
For the starter gig in the Friday opener, the Diamondbacks will go with Humberto Castellanos. This year Castellanos is 2-1 with a 4.11 ERA and 24 Ks to his credit.
The Dodgers are 4-1 in their last five in game one of a series and 38-15 in their last 53 overall. LA is 16-7 in their last 23 road games and 81-38 in their last 119 versus the NL West.
Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks are 20-41 in their last 61 home games and 10-27 in their last 37 in game one of a series. Arizona is 6-20 in their last 26 Friday games as well.
PICK: I’m going to try the Dodgers in this one, despite the thick line. Gonsolin is coming off something of a spotty outing, putting up 2.1 innings with three earned, two walks, three hits and a homer in Cincinnati. The good news however is that Gonsolin put up 5.0 innings with two hits, no earned, two walks and six Ks versus the Diamondbacks in the game before that. I like Gonsolin to notch another strong start and put LA in position for a W here.
