The Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers meet Monday in MLB action from Globe Life Field. Houston is fresh off a weekend series against the Marlins. After losses in the first two games of that set, on Sunday Houston won by five runs. As for the Rangers, they played the White Sox this past weekend. Texas split the first pair, then in the Sunday rubber match the Rangers won by two runs. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Houston had some trouble with the Marlins in their first two games this past weekend, losing 7-4 and 5-1. In the Sunday finale, the Astros bagged 14 team hits in a 9-4 win. Justin Verlander put up 7.0 clean frames on three hits and a walk.
For the starter gig in the Monday game the Astros will send out Cristian Javier. In his 11 games (seven starts) this year Javier is 3-3 with a 3.22 ERA. Over 44.2 innings he has 35 hits, 16 earned, 16 walks and 56 Ks.
Over on the Rangers’ side, they lost to the White Sox on Friday 8-3 but bounced back for an 11-9 win in the Saturday game. On Sunday Texas scored five runs across the 11th and 12th innings in a wild 8-6 victory. The Rangers notched 11 team hits along the way.
As the starting pitcher Monday the Rangers will send out Taylor Hearn. Over 11 starts in 2022 Hearn is 4-4 with a 5.40 ERA. In 50.0 total innings he’s got 58 hits, 30 earned, 25 walks and 47 Ks.
The Astros are 39-17 in their last 56 in game one of a series and 14-5 in their last 19 versus the AL West. The under is 5-1 in Houston’s last six Monday games.
Meanwhile, the Rangers are 25-51 in their last 76 in game one of a series and 3-7 in their last 10 on grass. The over is 4-1 in Texas’ last five versus a right-handed starter.
PICK: I’m going to try the Astros here. Javier needs a bounce-back outing, however. He’s coming off 3.2 innings with five earned on six hits and a walk in a loss to Seattle. That said, Javier did quite well in his previous two appearances, totaling 9.2 innings with one earned on seven hits and five walks. If Houston can get four or five solid innings out of Javier I think they’ll be well on the way to a victory.
