Detroit took a 5-2 loss to the Red Sox on Monday in their series opener, then fell in a tough 5-4 result in game two. In the Wednesday finale, the Tigers had a brief lead early but eventually fell 6-2 after going up four runs in the third inning alone.

For the starter gig in the Friday matchup, the Tigers are sending out Rony Garcia. This year in 13 games (five starts) Garcia is 1-2 with a 4.97 ERA. In 38.0 innings he has 31 hits, 21 earned, nine walks and 41 Ks.

Over on the Diamondbacks’ side, they lost to the Padres 4-1 on Monday in their series opener. Arizona followed that up with a 3-2 loss in game two. In the Wednesday finale, the Diamondbacks gave up 16 team hits on the way to a 10-4 defeat.

As the starting pitcher for Friday’s matchup, Arizona is going with Merrill Kelly. In 14 starts this year Kelly is 6-4 with a 3.46 ERA. In 78.0 innings he has 30 earned on 72 hits and 29 walks with 66 Ks.

The Tigers are 2-5 in their last seven versus a team with a losing record and 16-43 in their last 59 Friday games. Detroit is 7-21 in their last 28 road games.

Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks are 4-1 in their last five after an off day and 11-27 in their last 38 Friday games. Arizona is 5-1 in the last six versus the AL Central.

PICK: I’m going to take a stab on the Tigers here. I could probably go either way in this one, though; both teams need a good showing in this opener. Garcia hasn’t been awful in his last three games, with 15.0 innings, nine earned, 14 hits and three walks for a 1-1 record. He’s coming off 6.0 innings with three earned in a win over Texas. Another outing like that from Garcia and the Tigers should be in good shape.
