The San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers meet Friday in MLB action from Dodger Stadium. San Diego is coming off a lengthy series versus the Rockies. After wins in the first four games, on Thursday the Padres fell by four runs. As for the Dodgers, they just finished up against the Giants. LA won the first three games in that set, and on Thursday the Dodgers bagged another victory. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
San Diego did well against the Rockies this week, winning the first four games of their series 4-1, 13-5, 3-2 and 9-1. On Thursday in the finale, the Padres gave up 14 hits in a 7-3 loss. Joe Musgrove posted 4.2 frames in the start with six earned, eight hits and a walk.
For the starter gig in the Friday matchup, San Diego will send out Sean Manaea. Over 19 starts this year Manaea is 6-5 with a 4.25 ERA. In 110.0 innings total he has 52 earned on 98 hits and 42 walks with 111 Ks.
Over on the Dodgers’ side, they took care of the Giants 8-2 Monday, 9-5 Tuesday and 3-0 Wednesday. In the Thursday matchup, LA put up three runs in the fourth on the way to a 5-3 victory. Clayton Kershaw lasted 4.0 innings with one earned on three hits and a walk.
As the starting pitcher Friday, the Dodgers are going with Tony Gonsolin. Over his 19 starts this season Gonsolin is 12-1 with a 2.41 ERA. Across 104.2 innings total he’s managed 28 earned, 66 hits, 28 walks and 96 Ks.
The Padres are 6-13 in their last 19 road games and 6-1 in their last seven in game one of a series. The over is 8-3-1 in San Diego’s last 12 Friday games.
Meanwhile, the Dodgers are 54-17 in their last 71 at home and 38-13 in their last 51 in game one of a series. LA is 51-21 in their last 72 overall.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on the Padres. So long as Manaea has a nice start, that is. Over his last three outings, Manaea is 2-1 with 15.1 innings, nine earned, 19 hits and six walks to his name. He stumbled a bit on July 25 versus the Tigers (four earned; 3.1 innings) but otherwise has hit 6.0 innings in two of his last three. Even with Gonsolin on the other side (12 earned in his last 16.0 innings), if Manaea can notch a quality start here I think the Padres will be in good shape.
