Toronto managed a split with the Rays this week, winning 3-1 Tuesday before a 3-2 loss Wednesday. On Thursday versus the Twins, the Jays scored six runs in the eighth inning during a 9-3 win. Starter Alek Manoah finished on 6.0 innings, two earned, two hits and four walks.
For the starting pitcher gig in the Friday matchup, the Jays will send out Jose Berrios. Across 21 starts this year Berrios is 8-4 with a 4.96 ERA. In 114.1 innings total he has 63 earned on 124 hits and 27 walks with 106 Ks.
Over on the Twins’ side, they fell to the Tigers Tuesday but won the other pair in that series 5-3 and 4-1. On Thursday, Minnesota was out-hit 13-3 in the defeat. Sonny Gray posted 5.0 clean frames in the start with one hit and five walks.
As the starter for the Friday matchup, the Twins are going with Tyler Mahle. In 19 starts this year Mahle is 5-7 with a 4.40 ERA. Over 104.1 innings he has 51 earned on 91 hits and 39 walks with 114 Ks.
The Jays are 11-3 in their last 14 overall and the under is 4-0 in their last four in game two of a series. The over is 7-2 in Toronto’s last nine Friday games.
Meanwhile, the Twins are 1-5 in their last six Friday games and the under is 12-3-1 in their last 16 at home. The over is 7-3-1 in Minnesota’s last 11 Friday games.
PICK: I’m going to stay with the Blue Jays. Berrios has been on a nice run lately. Over his last three starts, Berrios has six earned runs in a total of 19.0 innings on 17 hits and four walks. He’s coming off one earned in 7.0 innings against the Tigers in his last outing. Berrios should be able to notch another quality start in this one, and I think he’ll have the Jays set up well for a win. It’ll be interesting to see what Mahle can do in his debut, however. He’s 2-0 in his last pair with five earned in 12.0 combined frames.
