Tampa Bay scored three runs in the top of the ninth Monday, powering out a 4-0 victory. In the Tuesday game two, the Rays scored all their runs in the top of the first in a 3-1 win. Starter Jeffrey Springs managed 5.0 innings, one earned run, two hits and one walk.
For the starter job in the Wednesday finale, the Rays will go with Corey Kluber. Over his 22 starts this year Kluber is 7-7 with a 4.40 ERA. In 116.2 innings total he has 57 earned, 122 hits, 17 walks and 103 Ks.
Over on the Yankees’ side, they blew a good start from Gerrit Cole (6.0 innings; one earned) in the Monday loss. On Tuesday, New York had just four hits and two errors in yet another defeat. Nestor Cortez put up 7.0 innings with three earned, four hits and three Ks.
Domingo German will take the mound for the Yankees on Wednesday in the start. Over five starts this year German is 1-2 with a 4.18 ERA. In 23.2 innings total he has 11 earned, 26 hits, eight walks and 17 Ks.
The Rays are 4-1 in their last five Wednesday games and 17-7 in their last 24 versus a team with a winning record. The under is 3-1-1 in Tampa’s last five Wednesday games.
Meanwhile, the Yankees are 27-9 in their last 36 Wednesday games and 38-13 in their last 51 at home. New York is 113-55 in their last 168 at home versus a right-handed starter.
PICK: I’m staying with the Rays. Probably not touching this one, though; it’s just difficult to trust New York right now. Kluber is coming off a rough game versus Baltimore with seven earned in 5.2 innings. He had seven earned in his previous 12.0 innings combined. As for German, he’s done fairly well over his last trio with four earned on 15 hits and five walks in 16.0 innings. German should be able to give a solid five innings or so in this one, but with the Yankees’ ineffective offense and shaky bullpen lately I can’t trust the team on a win.
