The Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates meet Friday in MLB action from PNC Park. This will be the second installment in a four-game weekend series. In the Thursday opener, the Cubs eked out a win. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.

Chicago played the Marlins this week, losing Monday but winning the other two games for a series victory. On Thursday versus Pittsburgh, the Cubs scored twice in the second inning and hung on for a 3-2 win. Starter Hayden Wesneski put up 6.1 innings with two earned on five hits and two walks.

For the starter job Friday, Chicago will send out Javier Assad. In his six games (five starts) so far Assad is 1-2 with a 3.86 ERA. In 23.1 innings total he has 10 earned on 22 hits and 14 walks with 21 Ks.

Over on the Pirates’ side, they played a couple versus the Yankees this week, falling 9-8 and 14-2. On Thursday Pittsburgh was out-hit 7-6 in the loss. Mitch Keller went 6.0 innings in the start with two earned, four hits and two walks.

For the starter gig in the Friday matchup the Pirates are going with Bryse Wilson. Across his 22 games (18 starts), Wilson is 3-9 with a 6.07 ERA. In 99.1 innings total he has 67 earned on 121 hits and 26 walks with 67 Ks.

The Cubs are 7-1 in their last eight Friday games and 2-6 in the last eight in game two of a series. The under is 3-0-1 in Chicago’s last four Friday games.

Meanwhile, the Pirates are 16-35 in their last 51 in game two of a series and 17-40 in their last 57 Friday games. Pittsburgh is 15-39 in their last 54 overall.

PICK: I’m going to stay with the Cubs, but probably not touching it. Both pitchers could use a good outing here. Wilson has 11 earned runs over his last 17.0 innings on 18 hits and four walks. As for Assad, he’s managed nine earned over his last three starts in 13.1 frames total. This one could get out of hand quickly if neither starter is on; should be an interesting matchup.
