The St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates meet in an NL Central division matchup in MLB action from PNC Park on Wednesday.
The St. Louis Cardinals will look to finish the season on a high headed into the postseason after an 8-7 win over the Pirates on Tuesday. Nolan Arenado has 30 home runs along with 102 RBIs, 42 doubles, 162 hits and a .292 batting average while Tommy Edman has a .262 batting average and 150 hits with 4 triples, 13 home runs and 56 RBIs. Dylan Carlson has 30 doubles, Paul Goldschmidt has a team-high 178 hits, 41 doubles and a .317 batting average with 35 home runs and 115 RBIs while Tyler O’Neill has 58 RBIs as well up to this point in the year. The Cardinals didn’t have a starting pitcher announced at the time that this article was posted.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will try to bounce back after their loss to the Cards in Tuesday’s matchup. Ke’Bryan Hayes has 123 hits and 24 doubles with a .245 batting average as well as 41 RBIs. Ben Gamel also has 46 RBIs while Michael Chavis also has 49 RBIs this season. Bryan Reynolds also has a team-high 27 home runs with 62 RBIs of his own and Jack Suwinski also has 19 homers this season. Oneil Cruz has also chipped in 17 home runs and 54 RBIs this year. Johan Oviedo will start here and is 4-3 with a 3.12 ERA and 53 strikeouts this season.
St. Louis is 1-4 in their last 5 games overall and 1-4 in their last 5 road games while the under is 5-2 in their last 7 games overall. Pittsburgh is 5-1 in their last 6 home games and 5-2 in their last 7 games overall while the under is 4-2 in their last 6 games overall.
I get the case to be made either way in this one, but I’m leaning towards the under here. I think it’s in the Cardinals’ best interests to rest some guys here and Johan Oviedo has actually pitched capably in his recent appearances, putting the Pirates in good spots down the stretch. I don’t expect a whole lot from the Pirates offensively either though, so I’m looking at the under here.
