The Milwaukee Brewers and the Chicago Cubs meet Thursday in MLB Opening Day action from Wrigley Field. Milwaukee is coming off an 86-76 record last year. The Brewers finished second in the National League Central with that run. As for Chicago, they went 74-88 overall last season and landed in third place among the division standings. Milwaukee Brewers

Milwaukee landed seven games behind the Cardinals in the division last year, and just missed out on a Wild Card spot—finishing one game behind Philadelphia in the standings. It was the first time since 2017 that the Brewers were eliminated from the postseason.

As the starting pitcher on Thursday, the Brewers will go with Corbin Burnes. Last season Burnes posted a 12-8 record overall with a 2.94 ERA. In 33 games (202.0 innings), Burnes managed 243 strikeouts and had a 0.97 WHIP. He went 1-3 with a 4.74 ERA in Spring Training.

Chicago Cubs

Over on the Cubs’ side, they managed a sketchy 74-88 record in 2022. That put Chicago in fourth place among the division and out of the playoffs for only the second time since 2014. The Cubs also made some trades of key remaining names from the 2016 World Series run (Javier Baez, Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo) as they gear up for the future.

Taking the mound for Chicago’s starter job on Thursday it’ll be Marcus Stroman. In 2022 Stroman put up a 6-7 record with a 3.50 ERA in 25 games (138.2 innings) alongside 119 strikeouts. Storman posted a 2-0 record in three starts this spring for a 0.90 ERA.

The Brewers are 7-3 in their last 10 versus the NL Central and the under is 5-0 in their last five Thursday games. The under is 8-1-1 in Milwaukee’s last 10 overall.

Meanwhile, the Cubs are 4-0 in their last four at home versus a right-handed starter and 6-0 in their last six at home. Chicago is 4-1 in their last five after an off day.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’ll probably take a stab on Milwaukee here. The Brewers are in for an interesting season; there will be some promising new faces to go along with the veterans on the roster, and on paper it should be a step forward. With Hunter Renfroe and Kolten Wong gone, we’ll see names like Sal Frelick and William Contreras taking the lead this season. Coupled with a strong rotation, Milwaukee should be able to do some damage if they can keep the bullpen consistent. As for Chicago, most people have them in the 75-win range again this year. The Cubs are still rebuilding, but if things shake out well we should see some improvements. I don’t think they’ll start out with a victory here though.
