Milwaukee played the Pirates this week, winning two of three games. In the Thursday opener versus the Diamondbacks, the Brewers were out-hit 10-4 in a 5-0 defeat. Starter Brandon Woodruff put up 5.2 innings with five earned on eight hits and two walks.
Eric Lauer will take the mound for the start on Friday for Milwaukee. Over his 24 starts so far Lauer is 10-5 with a 3.58 ERA. In 135.2 innings total he has 54 earned, 117 hits, 51 walks and 129 Ks.
Over on the Diamondbacks’ side, they won two of three games versus the Phillies in a high-scoring series this week. On Thursday, Arizona scored twice in both the first and sixth innings. Merrill Kelly managed 7.0 clean frames in the start with four hits, no walks and seven Ks.
Starter for the Friday matchup will be the Diamondbacks’ Zach Davies. Across 21 starts this year Davies is 2-4 with a 3.82 ERA. In 108.1 innings total he has 46 earned, 92 hits, 38 walks and 80 strikeouts.
The Brewers are 3-10 in their last 13 road games and the under is 4-1 in their last five Friday games. The over is 18-7-1 in Milwaukee’s last 26 in game two of a series.
Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks are 8-17 in their last 25 in game two of a series and 15-33 in their last 48 Friday games. Arizona is 8-3 in their last 11 at home versus a lefty starter.
PICK: I’m going to try the Diamondbacks in this one. We should have a pretty fun pitching matchup as well. Davies has posted four earned runs over his last 16.1 frames in three starts. He’s allowed 13 hits and six walks in that time. As for Lauer, he’s coming off a shaky performance with four earned in 5.0 innings versus the Cubs (still a win) but had put up just two earned in his previous 12.0 innings. This should be a fun one; it seems close to a coin flip if both starters are on point.
