The Baltimore Orioles and the Boston Red Sox meet Monday in MLB action from Fenway Park. This will be the fifth and final game of the weekend series. Baltimore won two of the first three installments, then on Sunday in game four the Sox evened it up with a blowout victory. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Baltimore managed a 12-8 win on Friday in the opener of this set, then split the Saturday doubleheader 5-3 (loss) and 4-2 (win). On Sunday, the O’s coughed up 15 hits to Boston in a 12-2 loss. Starter Bruce Zimmerman put up 4.0 innings with six earned on eight hits and a walk.
For the starter gig in the Monday game, the Orioles will send out Tyler Wells. In his nine starts this year Wells is 1-4 with a 4.30 ERA. Over his 37.2 innings he’s got 38 hits, 18 earned, six walks and 25 Ks.
Over on the Sox’ side, they gave up all four runs in the third inning during the nightcap of the Saturday doubleheader. On Sunday, Boston scored five runs in the eighth inning to cap off the victory. Nick Pivetta lasted 6.0 frames with one earned on five hits and three walks.
Rich Hill will make the start for the Sox on Monday. In his eight starts this season Hill is 1-2 with a 3.86 ERA. Over 35.0 innings Hill has 32 hits, 15 earned runs, nine walks and 24 Ks to his credit.
The Orioles are 20-41 in their last 51 Monday games and 57-122 in their last 179 overall. Baltimore is 22-59 in their last 81 versus the AL East.
Meanwhile, the Sox are 9-4 in their last 13 versus a right-handed starter and 38-17 in their last 55 at home versus a team with a losing record.
PICK: I’m going to try the Orioles here. We should have a pretty solid starter matchup regardless though, and each pitcher could use a decent outing. Wells is 0-2 over his last three starts, with 13.2 innings and eight earned. As for Hill, he’s 0-1 over his last pair with 7.0 innings and six earned on eight hits and two walks. This game is something of a coin flip, but I think Baltimore can pull it off if Wells pitches to his capabilities.
