Detroit played the Orioles this week, winning the first two games before a Wednesday loss. On Friday versus Chicago, the Tigers scored three runs in the first two innings and held on for a 5-3 win. Eduardo Rodriguez put up 6.0 innings in the start with three earned on eight hits and a walk.
For the starter gig in the Saturday game the Tigers will send out Drew Hutchison. Over 26 games (16 starts) Hutchison is 2-9 with a 4.59 ERA. In 96.0 innings total he has 49 earned on 103 hits and 38 walks with 62 Ks.
Over on the White Sox’ side, they didn’t play well versus the Guardians this week and fell in a sweep. In the Friday matchup Chicago was out-hit 9-8 in the defeat. Starter Lucas Giolito managed 6.0 innings, three earned, six hits and a walk.
Davis Martin will take the mound for the start on Saturday. In 11 games (six starts) this year Martin is 2-4 with a 3.78 ERA. In 50.0 innings total he has 21 earned on 43 hits and 16 walks with 35 Ks.
The Tigers are 21-45 in their last 66 overall and 2-5 in the last seven in game two of a series. Detroit is 14-37 in the last 51 versus a right-handed starter.
Meanwhile, the Sox are 5-1 in their last six Saturday games and 12-4 in their last 16 in game two of a series. The under is 3-1-1 in Chicago’s last five in game two of a series.
PICK: I’m going to try the Sox. Martin has only pitched twice this month, but both outings have gone well. In that pair he’s got one earned on six hits and two walks in 11.0 innings. If Martin can put up another one like that, Chicago will be set up well. As for Hutchison, he’s got to bounce back after giving up 10 earned in 10.0 innings over his last two starts. We’ll see how that goes.
