The Detroit Tigers and the Cincinnati Reds meet in MLB action from Great American Ballpark on Friday.
The Detroit Tigers will look to rebound from an 8-6 loss at the hands of the Oakland A’s on Thursday. All of Detroit’s damage on the scoreboard came via long balls, as Jeimer Candlario had a three-run home run while Akil Baddoo added a two-run shot and Harold Castro added a base hit as well to finish off the scoring for Detroit in the losing effort. Victor Reyes went 3 for 4 with a triple while Zach Short, Robbie Grossman and Erik Haase each had base hits as well in the loss. Matt Manning took the loss, falling to 3-6 after allowing all eight runs on eight hits over 3.2 innings of work. Tyler Alexander will start here and is 2-2 with a 4.34 ERA and 61 strikeouts this season.
The Cincinnati Reds will look to build on their doubleheader split with the St. Louis Cardinal from Wednesday. Game one saw Cincy fall 5-4 starting pitcher Wade Miley had a double and two RBIs while Joey Votto had a double and an RBI as well and Tucker Barnhart had an RBI to cap off the Reds’ scoring. Miley took the loss, falling to 11-5 after allowing all five runs on 12 hits. Game two saw the Reds rout St. Louis 12-2 with Nick Castellanos put up a pair of home runs and six RBIs while Kyle Farmer had three RBIs with a two-run home run. Delino DeShield added two RBIs while Eugenio Suarez had an RBI as well to finish off the Reds’ scoring in game two. Sonny Gray got the win in game two, improving to 7-6 after allowing two runs on two hits while striking out three over five innings of work. Vladimir Gutierrez will start here and is 9-5 with a 4.03 ERA and 75 strikeouts this season.
Detroit is 6-2 in their last 8 road games and 86-177 in their last 263 games as a road underdog while the under is 6-0-1 in their last 7 road games. Cincinnati si 23-7 in their last 30 Friday games and 11-4 in their last 15 home games while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games against a team with a losing record.
This should be an interesting game between two teams with starters on their mounds that have had issues recently. With that said, I do trust Vlad Gutierrez more at home even with his struggles at Great American Ballpark, but he’s at least getting more comfortable while a pitcher like Alexander may have issues. I’ll take the Reds here.
