Jose Leclerc will help the bullpen, and Gio Urshela adds a veteran presence to the infield. The Athletics shored up some of their future by inking Brent Rooker and Lawrence Butler to long-term extensions. The offense will be once again centered around Julio Rodriguez despite a decent .273 average in 2024, which still feels below average for a player of his caliber. Cal Raleigh will also be expected to be a cornerstone of offense as one of the premier power bats in Seattle’s lineup. The supporting cast around the two remains a question mark, though, and Seattle’s bullpen needs to get back to form if the Mariners are going to get back to competing in what looks to be a wide-open AL West this season. The Mariners will face the Tigers following this series.

I’m on the Mariners in this game. I just think that we will be able to find value spots to take Oakland this season; this just doesn’t happen to be one of them. The Mariners, for me, are the better team by a fair margin and the far more trustworthy team, and I just need to see something from Seattle before I blindly back them in the season opener. There are far better places to have your money on Opening day, but for this one, I’ll side with Seattle.
