The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox meet Sunday in MLB action from Fenway Park. This will be the final installment in a three-game weekend series between these AL East rivals. The Sox managed a two-run victory in the opener, then in the Saturday game the Red Sox bagged another win. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
New York coughed up three runs in the first inning on Friday and couldn’t score after the second frame in a 5-3 loss. In the Saturday game, the Yankees showed some late offensive life but ultimately lost 4-2. Starter Jordan Montgomery put up 6.0 innings with three earned on eight hits and two walks.
For the Sunday game, the Yankees will send Gerrit Cole to the mound in the start. Over his 96.2 innings this year, Cole has 67 hits, 26 runs (25 earned), 11 homers allowed, 15 walks, 123 Ks and a 2.33 ERA overall.
Over on the Red Sox’ side, they were out-hit 9-7 by the Yankees in the opener but still managed enough offense to get the W. In the Saturday game, Boston scored three runs in the first three innings on the way to the victory. Nathan Eovaldi went 7.2 innings with seven hits and one earned.
For the Sunday starting role, the Sox will send out Eduardo Rodriguez. Over his 72.2 innings this year, Rodriguez has 87 hits, 51 runs (49 earned), 11 homers, 19 walks, 85 Ks and a 6.07 ERA.
The Yankees are 7-3 in their last 10 in game three of a series and 3-7 in their last 10 versus a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. The under is 4-1 in New York’s last five Sunday games and the over is 3-1-1 in their last five in game three of a series.
Meanwhile, the Sox are 19-7 in their last 26 versus the AL East and 2-5 in their last seven in game three of a series. Boston is 1-4 in their last five Sunday games and the over is 4-0-1 in their last five Sunday games.
PICK: I’m still going with the Red Sox. Rodriguez has had a few issues over his last three starts, with 13 earned over 14.2 innings. As for Cole, he’s given up two earned in each of his last three starts for a total of six in the span of 21.0 innings. That said, considering how spotty and unreliable the Yankees offense has been for most of the year, it’s hard to trust the New York bats to do much of anything. If Rodriguez can keep things manageable in this one I think Boston still has the inside track on a win.
