New York scored five runs in the fifth inning during the Friday opener, then cruised to a 9-2 victory. In the Saturday game the Mets posted three runs in the top of the first but eventually lost 10-4. Starter Jacob deGrom lasted 4.0 frames with five earned on six hits and four walks.
For the starter gig in the Sunday finale New York is sending out Max Scherzer. In his 21 starts so far Scherzer is 10-4 with a 2.15 ERA. Over 133.2 innings total he has 32 earned on 95 hits and 23 walks with 162 Ks.
Over on the A’s side, they were down 9-0 at one point during the Friday game. In the Saturday game two, Oakland scored four runs in the first inning on the way to 14 team hits. Ken Waldichuk put up 5.0 innings, four earned, five hits and four strikeouts.
JP Sears will take the mound for the start on Sunday. This year Sears is 6-2 with a 3.58 ERA in 15 games (10 starts). In 60.1 innings he has 43 Ks.
The Mets are 7-2 in their last nine Sunday games and 6-2 in their last eight road games versus a lefty starter. The over is 13-6-1 in New York’s last 20 in game three of a series.
Meanwhile, the A’s are 4-1 in their last five Sunday games and 21-48 in their last 69 at home. Oakland is 6-20 in their last 26 versus the NL East.
PICK: I’m probably staying Mets here. Scherzer has put up just two earned in 18.0 total innings over his last three starts. In that time he’s got seven hits, two walks and 25 strikeouts. As for Sears, he’s coming off 5.0 clean innings in his last outing but gave up 11 combined earned over his previous 6.0 frames. If Scherzer is on point again, the Mets should have the advantage.
