The New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies meet in an NL East division matchup in MLB action from Citi Field on Saturday.
The New York Mets will look to build some momentum back up after settling for a split in Friday’s doubleheader, with the Mets taking game one by a final score of 2-1 while the Phillies returned the favor in game two with a 2-1 win of their own. Game one saw Francisco Lindor go 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI while Dominic Sith had the other RBI and Pete Alonso added a double of his own as the Mets had just four hits as a team in the win. Taijuan Walker gave up one run with five strikeouts in five innings while Seth Lugo got the win in relief. Game two saw James McCann had the Mets’ lone RBI while Patrick Mazelka and Pete Alonso each had two hits and Billy McKinney added a base knock as well. David Peterson allowed one run on three hits but Sean Reid-Foley took the loss, falling to 2-1 on the year. Jacob deGrom will start here and is 7-2 with a 0.50 ERA and 117 strikeouts this season. in his career, deGrom is 8-1 with a 2.25 ERA and 121 strikeouts against Philadelphia.
The Philadelphia Phillies will look to build some steam after earning the split in the second half of Friday’s double dip. Game one saw Aaron Nola go 2 for 3 with a double and the Phillies’ lone RBI while J.T. Realmuto had the other hit as the Phils had just three hits as a team in the loss. Nola threw 5.1 shutout innings with 12 strikeouts, but Ranger Suarez took the loss in relief to fall to 3-2 on the year. Game two saw Bryce Harper belt a solo home run while Odubel Herrera had an RBI as well to cap off the scoring while Rafael Marchan had a pair of hits as the Phillies had three this as a team in the win. Matt Moore threw five shutout innings in the start but Archie Bradley got the win to improve to 3-1 while Hector Neris closed the 9th for his 11th save of the season. Zach Eflin will start this one and is 2-6 with a 4.39 ERA and 83 strikeouts this season. in his career, Eflin is 3-4 with a 5.00 ERA and 57 strikeouts against the Mets.
Philadelphia is 16-33 in their last 49 road games and 2-5 in their last 7 games as an underdog while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games against a right-handed starter. New York is 4-1 in their last 5 Saturday games and 40-18 in their last 58 home games against a team with a losing record. The under is 5-1 in their last 6 games following a loss. The under is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
The plus money is tempting with a Philadelphia team starting Zach Eflin who’s actually pitched fairly well this season. However, Jacob deGrom is simply pitching on another level that’s not even on this planet and it’s simply at a point where you back deGrom just because. The Mets are also starting to create some distance in the NL East standings and sending deGrom to the bump will only help with that goal. I’ll back the Mets -1.5 in this one.
