The Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets meet Sunday in MLB action from Citi Field. This will be the final installment in a four-game set between these teams over the weekend. After a split in the Friday doubleheader, on Saturday the Mets eked out a one-run win. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Philadelphia had just three hits in game one of the Friday doubleheader and fell 2-1. The Phillies returned the favor with a 2-1 win in the nightcap, though. On Saturday, the Phillies posted just four hits in a 4-3 loss. Starter Zach Eflin lasted 6.0 innings with five hits, one walk and one earned run.
For the starter job in the Sunday finale, the Phillies are turning to Zack Wheeler. Across his 99.1 innings this year, Wheeler has 74 hits, 27 runs (26 earned), seven homers allowed, 23 walks, 122 Ks and a 2.36 ERA.
Over on the Mets’ side, they out-hit Philly 5-3 in game two Friday but couldn’t translate that to runs in the loss. In the Saturday game, the Mets had eight team hits in the victory. Jacob deGrom went 6.0 innings with two earned on three hits and a walk.
For Sunday’s starting pitcher role, the Mets will send out Marcus Stroman. So far this year Stroman is 6-5 with a 2.32 ERA and 75 strikeouts.
The Phillies are 8-2 in their last 10 in game four of a series and 16-33 in their last 49 road games. Philly is 8-18 in their last 26 Sunday games and the over is 5-1 in their last six Sunday games.
Meanwhile, the Mets are 17-6 in their last 23 home games and 14-6 in their last 20 versus a right-handed starter. New York is 1-4 in their last five Sunday games and the under is 19-7-1 in their last 27 home games.
PICK: I’m going to take a shot on the Phillies here. Wheeler posted just 3.0 innings in his last start, giving up three earned on six hits and a walk. Prior to that, he had a scoreless streak of 14.0 innings across two starts, with nine hits and 18 walks. If Philly can get six or seven solid innings out of Wheeler they should be in great shape as far as getting a W in the finale.
