The New York Yankees and the Texas Rangers meet Sunday in MLB action from Globe Life Field. This will be the finale in a four-game weekend series. After a split in the first two installments, on Saturday Texas took the series lead with a shutout victory. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
New York Yankees
The Yankees managed a 4-2 victory in the Thursday opener of this series, but then fell 5-2 in the Friday game. In game three New York had just three hits in a 2-0 loss. Starter Jhony Brito put up 5.0 innings, two earned, four hits and a walk.
For the starter job in the Sunday matchup it’ll be New York’s Nestor Cortes. In his five starts this year Cortes is 3-1 with a 3.49 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 28.1 innings. Cortes is 22-10 with a 3.59 ERA in his career over 97 games (49 starts).
Texas Rangers
Over on the Rangers’ side, they managed all their runs in the first three innings on Friday, cruising to the win on 10 team hits. On Saturday Texas got a complete-game shutout from Nathan Eovaldi with three hits, no walks and eight strikeouts.
Martin Perez will take the mound for the start on Sunday. Across five starts this year Perez is 3-1 with a 2.60 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 27.2 innings. Perez is 78-78 with a 4.40 ERA in his career after 258 games (228 starts).
The Yankees are 8-3 in their last 11 Sunday games and the under is 6-2 in their last eight Sunday games. The under is 22-8-2 in New York’s last 32 in game four of a series.
Meanwhile, the Rangers are 4-0 in their last four Sunday games and 20-44 in their last 64 in game four of a series. Texas is 15-42 in their last 47 versus the AL East.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll take a stab on the Rangers here. Perez is doing well over his last three starts. He’s 2-0 in that time with five earned in 17.0 innings on 19 hits and five walks. As for Cortes, he’s 1-1 in his last trio with eight earned on 14 hits and three walks in 18.0 innings. On Saturday Texas scored in just one inning but didn’t need much beyond Eovaldi’s excellent outing. If the bats get moving a bit, I think the Rangers can strike another blow in the finale and win the series.
