Baltimore Orioles 

The Orioles kicked off their west-coast swing with a series versus the Mariners over the weekend and ended up with two wins in three games. On Sunday in a 5-3 victory Baltimore’s Cedric Mullins posted a two-run homer. On Monday versus the Padres, the O’s scored three in the fifth inning on the way to a 4-1 win. Gunnar Henderson got two hits and three RBI, while Ryan O’Hearn had a solo homer. 

In the starter role for game two it’ll be Baltimore’s Jack Flaherty. In his 22 starts this year Flaherdy is 8-7 with a 4.33 ERA and 122 Ks in 120.2 innings. Flaherty is 1-1 in his last pair with a 3.27 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 11.0 innings.

Over on the Padres’ side, they beat the Diamondbacks back on Friday but lost the two weekend games 3-0 and 5-4. In Sunday’s defeat, San Diego’s Jake Cronenworth posted three hits with two RBI. On Monday the Padres couldn’t get the offense going on four team hits. Garrett Cooper had the lone RBI on a solo home run. 

It’ll be Michael Wacha in the starter role for the Padres on Tuesday. Across his 15 starts this year Wacha is 8-2 with a 2.84 ERA and 73 strikeouts over 85.2 innings. Wacha is 4-1 with a 1.52 ERA in his last seven starts.

I’m going to stay with the Padres. This should be a fun starter matchup with two ex-Cardinals on the mound, though. Wacha has been pitching great over his last trio, with just three earned in 17.2 innings total on 13 hits and five walks for a 2-0 record. Flaherty is a little shakier but still not terrible with seven earned in his last 16.0 innings of work. I like both starters to put up solid lines in this one. On Monday San Diego really just had the one bad inning defensively. The offense was pretty cold, though. That makes one or fewer runs scored in four of the last six games, so the Padres are going to have to step it up at the plate here. You could easily make a case for Baltimore as well.
