Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates took on the Angels over the weekend and stumbled with two losses in three games. On Monday versus the Padres Pittsburgh scored three times in both the third and fifth innings in an 8-4 win. Carlos Santana posted two homers, four RBI and three hits, and Liover Peguero had three RBI.

In the starter role for the Pirates on Tuesday it’ll be Rich Hill. Over 20 starts so far this year Hill is 7-9 with a 4.84 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 109.2 innings. Hill is coming off four earned in 5.2 innings versus the Guardians.

San Diego Padres

Over on the Padres’ side, they won a series versus the Tigers over the weekend with victories 5-4 Friday and 14-3 Saturday. On Monday versus Pittsburgh the Padres were out-hit 13-6 in the loss. San Diego got two homers and three RBI from Kim Ha-seong. Manny Machado also went 1-for-4.

Blake Snell will take the starter role for the Padres on Tuesday. Over his 20 starts this year Snell is 6-8 with a 2.67 ERA and 143 Ks in 108.0 innings. Snell took a tough-luck loss to the Blue Jays in his last start, going 5.0 innings with just one earned run.

I’m staying with the Padres. The line’s too thick to mess with, though. Snell is on a nice run these days. He’s got just the one earned run in his last three starts combined on 16.0 innings, nine hits and 13 walks. The free passes got a bit high in his last start (seven) but Snell should be good for a quality outing here. On Monday the Padres had a pretty rough offensive outing. That makes four or more runs in three of the last four games however, so San Diego seems primed for an offensive comeback. I like San Diego to even up the series in game two.
