The Seattle Mariners and the Boston Red Sox meet Wednesday in MLB action from Fenway Park. This will be the finale in a three-game series. The Mariners took a blowout victory on Monday in the opener, then in game two the Sox evened it up with a five-run win. Check back all season long for MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Seattle Mariners
The Mariners didn’t score until the fifth inning on Monday but eventually powered out a 10-1 win. In the Tuesday matchup Seattle came back from an early 4-0 deficit but ultimately lost 9-4. Starting pitcher Luis Castillo finished with 5.0 innings, five earned, six hits and two walks.
Marco Gonzales will make the start for the Mariners on Wednesday. Over his seven starts so far this year Gonzales is 3-0 with a 4.42 ERA and 25 Ks in 36.2 innings. Gonzales is 64-48 with a 4.09 career ERA in 160 games (152 starts).
Boston Red Sox
Over on the Red Sox’ side, they were out-hit 15-9 in the Monday opener and couldn’t get much going on the scoreboard. On Tuesday Boston out-hit the Mariners 11-8. Nick Pivetta lasted 5.1 innings with four earned on six hits and four walks.
Brayan Bello will make the start for Boston on Wednesday. In his five starts this year Bello is 2-1 with a 5.01 ERA and 24 Ks in 23.1 innings. Bello is 4-9 with a 4.80 ERA in 18 career games (16 starts).
The Mariners are 10-4 in their last 14 overall and 14-4 in their last 18 versus the AL East. Seattle is 9-4 in their last 13 on grass.
Meanwhile, the Sox are 24-6 in their last 30 versus the AL West and 38-18 in their last 56 at home versus a lefty starter. Boston is 6-13 in their last 19 Wednesday games.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll probably try the Red Sox here. Bello has been pitching pretty well lately. Over his last three starts, he’s got just five earned in 16.0 combined innings on 17 hits and four walks. Bello should be able to put the team in a good position in this one. In the Tuesday matchup, Boston’s bullpen combined for 3.2 innings, two hits, zero walks, zero earned and two strikeouts in a nice effort. Four different Sox players had multiple hits as well. If Boston can keep it rolling I like their chances in game three.
