The Milwaukee Brewers and the St. Louis Cardinals meet Thursday in MLB action from Busch Stadium. Milwaukee is fresh off a series versus the Padres. The Brewers split the first pair in that set, then on Wednesday Milwaukee eked out a one-run win. As for St. Louis, they played two versus the Blue Jays in their last series, winning one of those. Milwaukee took a tough 3-2 loss to the Padres on Monday, but then bounced back for a 4-1 Tuesday win. In the Wednesday finale, the Brewers took the series with a 2-1 victory. Aaron Ashby finished on 5.2 clean innings in the start with four hits and three walks.
For the starter gig in the Thursday game one, the Brewers are going with Eric Lauer. Over seven starts this year Lauer is 4-1 with a 2.16 ERA. In his 41.2 innings of work he’s posted 31 hits, 10 earned, eight walks and 54 Ks.
Over on the Cardinals’ side, they were able to power out a 7-3 win over the Blue Jays on Monday. Game two didn’t go so well for St. Louis on Tuesday, however. The Cardinals coughed up 12 hits and two errors in an 8-1 blowout loss.
Adam Wainwright will take the mound for the Cardinals on Thursday. Across his eight starts so far Wainwright is 5-3 with a 2.87 ERA. In 47.0 innings he’s got 38 hits, 15 earned, 18 walks and 36 strikeouts.
The Brewers are 23-11 in their last 34 overall and 7-2 in their last nine in game one of a series. The under is 4-0 in Milwaukee’s last four in game one of a series.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals are 17-4 in their last 21 versus a lefty starter and 22-7 in the last 29 versus the NL Central. St. Louis is 15-6 in the last 21 in game one of a series.
PICK: I’m going to stay Cardinals here. Wainwright is on a nice run right now. Over his last three games he’s 3-0 with just three earned on eight hits and six walks in 20.0 innings of work. As for Lauer, he had a sketchy start against Miami back on May 14 (four earned in 5.0 innings) but otherwise has been great lately as well. Should be a fun starter matchup, and I like the Cardinals to eventually pull off the victory.
