The Toronto Blue Jays and the St. Louis Cardinals meet Tuesday in MLB action from Busch Stadium. This will be the final installment in a quick two-game series. In the Monday opener, the Cardinals posted a four-run victory in a grand-slam walk-off. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Toronto played the Reds over the weekend, winning Friday and Saturday before a Sunday loss 3-2. In the Monday game versus the Cards, the Jays coughed up a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning in a tough 7-3 loss. Jose Berrios put up 6.1 innings in the start with three earned on seven hits.
Kevin Gausman will take the mound for Toronto on Tuesday. In his eight starts this year Gausman is 3-3 with a 2.52 ERA. Over 50.0 innings he’s got 49 hits, 14 earned, three walks and 57 Ks.
Over on the Cardinals’ side, they beat the Pirates 5-3 and 5-4 in their last series, then posted an 18-4 blowout Sunday for the sweep. On Monday, St. Louis got the winning homer from Paul Goldschmidt in an epic finish. Starter Miles Mikolas left with 6.2 innings, two earned, four hits and two walks.
For the starter gig in the Tuesday game, the Cardinals will go with Jordan Hicks. In his eight games (six starts) this year, Hicks is 1-3 with a 4.21 ERA. Over 25.2 innings total he’s got 12 earned, 16 hits, 15 walks and 26 strikeouts.
PICK: I’m going to try the Jays in this one. Gausman is looking pretty solid over his last few starts, even though he’s only got a 1-2 record in that time. Over that trio, Gausman has 18.1 innings, six earned runs, 18 hits and three walks. The Toronto offense is going to need to give him some backup, but I think Gausman will be able to hold things together while he’s out there. Should be a fun matchup.
