Los Angeles Angels 

The Angels took on the Astros over the weekend, losing two of three games. In Sunday’s 2-1 win, LA’s Shohei Ohtani notched a solo home run. On Monday versus Texas, the Angels were out-hit 13-1 and had three errors during a very rough 12-0 shutout loss. Mike Moustakas (hit) and Hunter Renfroe (walk) were the only players to get on base. 

For the starter job on Tuesday it’ll be the Angels’ Lucas Giolito. In his 24 starts so far Giolito is 7-8 with a 4.37 ERA and 145 Ks in 136.0 innings. Across his last four starts Giolito is 0-1 with a 4.98 ERA and 12 earned in 21.2 innings.

Texas Rangers 

Over on the Rangers’ side, they beat the Giants Friday and Saturday but failed to pull off the sweep with a 3-2 Sunday defeat. Ezequiel Duran had the lone RBI with two hits and a run as well. On Tuesday Texas scored three in the third inning and five in the seventh during the victory. Marcus Semien was the lead hitter on five RBI, a homer and two hits. 

Jordan Montgomery will take the mound for the Rangers on Tuesday. In his 23 starts overall Montgomery is 7-10 with a 3.38 ERA and 119 strikeouts over 133.0 innings. Montgomery has gone 1-1 in his last pair with a 3.00 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 12.0 frames.

I’m going to stay with the Rangers in this one. Montgomery is doing fairly well since the beginning of the month, posting four earned runs on 13 hits and two walks in 12.0 innings. As for Giolito, he’s 1-2 in his last three starts with 15 earned runs in 15.0 innings total during that time. If Texas can get the bats going early in this one, they’ll be in good shape. On Monday in the opener, the Rangers got a great outing from starter Max Scherzer (7.0 innings; one hit; one walk; 11 strikeouts) so the pen will be fresh for game two. Texas had two runs or fewer in three of four games recently, but they seem to be getting back to business at the plate these days.
