The New York Mets and the Detroit Tigers meet Tuesday in MLB action from Comerica Park. The Mets are coming off a weekend series versus the Braves. After a Friday shutout loss, in the Monday doubleheader New York managed a split. As for Detroit, they played the Orioles in their last series. Detroit lost three of four games in that set. New York Mets
The Mets lost to the Braves 4-0 on Friday, then had a couple of weather postponements over the weekend. In the Monday doubleheader New York took a 9-8 loss in game one. In the nightcap, the Mets ended up with a 5-2 victory.
As starter for the Tuesday matchup, the Mets will send out Joey Lucchesi. Over two starts this year Lucchesi is 1-0 with a 2.19 ERA and 12 Ks in 12.1 innings of work. Lucchesi is 20-24 with a 4.17 ERA in his career over 72 games (68 starts).
Detroit Tigers
Over on the Detroit side, they beat the Orioles 7-4 on Saturday. The other three games were losses 7-4, 6-4 and 5-3, however. In the Sunday finale, Tigers starter Spencer Turnbull finished with 4.0 innings, two earned, five hits and two walks.
In the starting role Tuesday, Detroit will go with Michael Lorenzen. This year Lorenzen is 0-1 with a 7.07 ERA and 15 Ks in 14.0 innings over three starts. In his career, Lorenzen is 31-30 with a 4.17 ERA in 316 games (47 starts).
The Mets are 43-20 in their last 63 in game one of a series and 21-7 in their last 28 versus the AL Central. New York is 0-4 in their last four Tuesday games.
Meanwhile, the Tigers are 4-1 in their last five Tuesday games and 2-5 in their last seven after an off day. Detroit is 1-4 in their last five overall.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll probably try the Tigers. I do like Lucchesi to have a solid start on the other side, though. Lucchesi has three earned on nine hits and four walks over 12.1 innings so far. He’s coming off a three-earned performance versus the Nationals. As for the Tigers, they’ll need a bounce-back start from Lorenzen, who posted 5.0 innings with five earned on seven hits and two walks in a road loss to Milwaukee back on April 26. Lorenzen posted 5.0 clean frames against Baltimore in his previous outing, though. If the offense can give him some support I think Detroit has a decent shot here.
