Dustin Ortiz and Willie Gates fight Saturday night in Tennessee at UFC Fight Night.
Dustin Ortiz enters this fight with a 14-4 record and is winning 43 percent of his fights by knockout. Ortiz has split his last four fights and is coming off a November loss to Joseph Benavidez. Ortiz is averaging 2.89 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 44.1 percent. Ortiz is averaging 2.46 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 32.4 percent. Ortiz is a scrappy, young fighter who has improved a lot as of late. Ortiz not only has knockout power, but he has a solid grappling game and has shown to be quite comfortable on the canvas as well. Ortiz also has great stamina, as all four of his losses have been by decision. Ortiz’s weakness is that he’s defending less than 50 percent of his takedowns and doesn’t do anything great. This will be Ortiz’s eighth time fighting in Tennessee, his hometown.
USA TODAY Sports
Willie Gates enters this fight with a 12-5 record and is winning 50 percent of his fights by knockout. Gates has won five of his last six fights and is coming off a July win over Darrell Montague. Gates is averaging 2.61 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 37.9 percent. Gates is averaging zero takedowns with an accuracy percentage of zero percent. Gates has been extremely busy, as this will be his eighth fight since 2014. Gates is a solid athlete with quick feet and ridiculous range. While lacking true knockout power, Gates is a decent striker and has an impressive leg kick as well. The weakness fr Gates is him finally putting everything together, and that will likely come as he gains more UFC experience. This will be Gates’ first career fight in Tennessee.
Gates is a dangerous opponent due to his athleticism and his length. After all, they call him Whoop Ass for a reason. However, Ortiz is the more balanced fighter and has far more experience. Not to mention he’s fighting in his hometown.
Have to pick Ortiz in this match.
