Antonio Silva and Stefan Struve fight Sunday at the Ahoy Rotterdam during UFC Fight Night 87.
Antonio Silva enters this fight with a 19-8 record and has won 79 percent of his fights by knockout. Silva has lost three of his last four fights and is coming off a November loss to Mark Hunt. Silva is averaging 2.89 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 45.7 percent. Silva is averaging 0.88 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 32 percent. Silva is clearly a shell of himself as he approaches 37 later in the year and has simply been a punching bag for opponents as of late. All seven of Silva’s losses since 2011 have come by knockout, and he has some conditioning issues when the fight drags out. The one thing going for Silva is he still has a big strength and power advantage most nights. This will be Silva’s first fight in the Netherlands.
USA TODAY Sports
Stefan Struve enters this fight with a 30-8 record and has won 53 percent of his fights by submission. Struve has split his last six fights and is coming off a November loss to Jared Rosholt. Struve is averaging 3.41 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 50 percent. Struve is averaging 0.52 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 80 percent. Struve also hasn’t been the same since his heart condition, as he’s lost three of his last four fights, which includes to knockouts. When in top form, Struve is a very balanced fighter who is most comfortable on the canvas and simply knows how to end fights. The problem is we haven’t seen Struve look good in years, and you wonder if the 28-year-old will ever ben able to return to elite form. Struve has a lot of fights in the Netherlands, his birthplace.
This fight is really hard to call because both fighters are a shell of what they once were. Struve is much younger, better in the wrestling department and has the home crowd behind him. However, Silva has the striking advantage and is up against a guy who has been knocked out twice recently.
I don’t like this fight at all, but if I had to pick, I’m siding with the value and going with the powerful striker and the plus money.
