Jake Collier and Alberto Uda fight Sunday night at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in UFC Fight Night 88.
Jake Collier enters this fight with a 9-2 record and has won 44 percent of his fights by knockout. Collier has split his last four fights and is coming off a November loss to Dong Yi Yang. Collier is averaging 3.88 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 36.2 percent. Collier is averaging 1.12 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 50 percent. Collier has been struggling since brought up to the UFC, as he’s been knocked out twice in three fights. Collier has to do a better job defensively when he’s coming in for his strikes, as he leaves himself too open for counters. Collier has potential and a nice 75-inch reach, but he has to win this fight given his current form. This will be Collier’s first fight in Las Vegas.
USA TODAY Sports
Alberto Uda enters this fight with a 9-0 record and has won 44 percent of his fights by knockout. This will be Uda’s third fight since 2015, and he’s coming off a December win over Thiago de Oliveira Perpetuo. Uda has put together a decent resume over the years and has only had one fight end in a decision. Uda’s wins include respectable names such as Rick Monstro and Junior Albini. Uda is great at fighting in the clinch and has an impressive takedown defense. Uda is a creative grappler who has four submission victories under his belt and is most effective on the inside. The downside is that Uda isn’t a great striker and is at his best when a fight is a little ugly.
As I wrote in the Jordan Rinaldi article, I’m not crazy about picking newcomers in their first UFC fight. However, Collier isn’t exactly great at any one thing and can be beaten when he allows his opponent to dictate the fight. Uda will have a chance if he’s able to clinch and get this fight to the canvas. If this fight gets ugly, Uda has as good of chance to win as Collier.
I’m going to side with Uda in this fight in what should be considered a toss-up.
