Tarec Saffiedine and Rick Story fight Sunday night at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in UFC Fight Night 88.
Tarec Saffiedine enters this fight with a 16-4 record and has won 63 percent of his fights by decision. Saffiedine has won five of his last six fights and is coming off a January win over Jake Ellenberger. Saffiedine is averaging 4.25 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 48.4 percent. Saffiedine is averaging 0.4 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 35.7 percent. Saffiedine looked sharp in his last fight despite missing over a year due to an injury. With rust not an issue here, Saffiedine can return to being one of the best knickboxers in the sport and a guy who defends strikes at a high percentage. Saffiedine has also improved his wrestling over the years. This will be Saffiedine’s second fight in Las Vegas.
USA TODAY Sports
Rick Story enters this fight with a 18-8 record and has won 56 percent of his fights by decision. Story has won four of his last six fights and is coming off a 2014 win over Gunnar Nelson. Story is averaging 3.84 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 41.3 percent. Story is averaging 2.72 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 54.1 percent. Story will fight for the first time in a year and a half due to injury. It will be interesting to see if Story can build on his two-fight winning streak after hitting a rough patch the last few years. Story is a brawler who likes to throw a lot of strikes and the messier the fight is, it seems to give the American the advantage. This will be Story’s fifth fight in Las Vegas.
Unless you’re an elite fighter, I don’t really trust guys who have been gone for such a long time. There’s sure to be rust with Story, and Saffiedine has been as consistent as you can get really with only one loss the last four years. Saffiedine is also a more accurate striker, which is key given both of these guys like fights that go the distance.
Give me Saffiedine in a decision due to not knowing what we’re going to get with Story.
