Edson Barboza and Gilbert Melendez fight Saturday at the United Center on UFC on Fox 20.
Edson Barboza enters this fight with a 17-4 record and has won 59 percent of his fights by knockout. Barboza has won seven of his last 10 fights and is coming off a April win over Anthony Pettis. Barboza is averaging 4.02 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 41.4 percent. Barboza is averaging 0.58 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 50 percent. Barboza continues to be hit or miss as of late and looks for back-to-back wins for the first time since 2014. Barboza is a volume striker who lands a ton of shots and has won four of his last eight fights by knockout. Barboza is dangerous when fighting standing up, however, two of his four losses have come by submission. This will be Barboza’s second fight in Chicago.
USA TODAY Sports
Gilbert Melendez enters this fight with a 22-5 record and has won 50 percent of his fights by knockout. Melendez has lost three of his last four fights and is coming off a June loss to Eddie Alvarez. Melendez is averaging 3.63 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 34.1 percent. Melendez is averaging 1.86 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 44.5 percent. Melendez is kind of in a must-win situation considering three of his five losses have come in his last four fights. When in good form, Melendez is a balanced fighter with knockout power and a polished grappling attack that allows him to wear down his opponent. The problem is we haven’t seen Melendez in good form in quite some time. This will be Melendez’s first fight in Chicago.
Not sure how anybody can pick Melendez to win this fight considering his form the last three or four times we’ve seen him fight. He hasn’t looked good at all and will likely struggle to keep up with how aggressive Barboza can be on the offensive end.
I’m siding with Barboza to win this fight.
