Stefan Struve and Alexander Volkov fight Saturday during UFC Fight Night 115 at the Ahoy Rotterdam.
Stefan Struve enters this fight with a 32-8 record and has won 53 percent of his fights by submission. Struve has split last six fights and is coming off a October win over Daniel Omielanczuk. Struve is averaging 3.39 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 50.3 percent. Struve is averaging 0.74 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 66.6 percent. Struve is coming off back-to-back finishes and has a shot to win three straight fights for the first time since 2012. Struve is always a tough matchup for opponents due to his 7’0” frame and 84 inch reach, and that length helps him with his striking accuracy and has led to eight knockout victories. Struve is also a polished wrestler who can become overwhelming on the canvas and has a variety of submission moves that he’s quick to unleash. The downside with Struve is his suspect chin, as he has been knocked out six times. This will be Struve’s ninth fight in the Netherlands, his birthplace.
USA TODAY Sports
Alexander Volkov enters this fight with a 28-6 record and has won 64 percent of his fights by knockout. Volkov has won his last four fights and is coming off a April win over Roy Nelson. Volkov is averaging 4.22 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 62.7 percent. Volkov is averaging 0.25 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 50 percent. Volkov is 2-0 under the UFC banner, winning both fights by decision and landing a combined 167 significant strikes. Volkov is a striker at heart who is most comfortable on the canvas and has 18 victories by knockout. Volkov has a reach of 80 inches, very heavy hands and has been deadly accurate with those blows in his first two fights on the big stage. Volkov is always throwing strikes and has a very successful ground and pound if things are ever taken to the canvas. This will be Volkov’s first fight in the Netherlands
This is an interesting fight considering Volkov is somebody who can kind of stand with Struve considering he’s 6’7” and has long arms of his own, so size may not be that big of a factor even though Stefan is still the bigger man here. Both guys are lengthy and can hold their own on their feet, but the difference for me is Struve’s ground game and ability to finish fights after the takedown. Volkov has been taken down in both of his UFC fights, and that should give Struve confidence he can take him out of his comfort zone. There’s also still a four-inch reach advantage in Struve’s favor. Struve is also 7-1 fighting in the Netherlands in his career.
I’ll go with the upset here and back Struve to win this fight.
