Jessica Andrade and Tecia Torres fight Saturday in the UFC on Fox 28 at the Amway Center.
Jessica Andrade enters this fight with a 17-6 record and has won 41 percent of her fights by submission. Andrade has won eight of her last 11 fights and is coming off a September win over Claudia Gadelha. Andrade is averaging 6.45 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 51.5 percent. Andrade is averaging 2.5 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 52.2 percent. Andrade is coming off a really impressive victory that earned her fight of the night honors, and it should be a confidence booster after losing the UFC Women's Strawweight Championship. Andrade looks for another victory here to kind of put her right back in the title conversation. As for her skill set, Andrade is an athletic fighter who has always been sharp with her standup striking, as she’s a very polished boxer with knockout potential, but she’s also produced 23 takedowns on the UFC level and has seven career submission victories. At 26 years old, Andrade is a downright brawler who forces her opponent to beat her if they’re going to get the victory, as she’s usually always the aggressor in the octagon. A feisty Brazilian, Andrade has shown she can do a little bit of everything and usually puts on a show win or lose. This will be Andrade’s first career fight in Florida.
USA TODAY Sports
Tecia Torres enters this fight with a 10-1 record and has won 90 percent of her fights by decision. Torres has won five of her last six fights, and she’s coming off a December win over Michelle Waterson. Torres is averaging 4.77 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 49.9 percent. Torres is averaging 0.78 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 17.2 percent. Torres has won her last three fights and is now 6-1 under the UFC banner, as she has a chance to continue climbing up the ladder quickly. At 28 years old, Torres is a pure striker who lands with great accuracy and is quite an athlete who controls the octagon well. Torres has a deep background in taekwondo and karate, and she makes it uncomfortable for her opponent, as she counters well and can pounce due to her quickness. Torres has also produced five takedowns on the UFC level and has shown she’s improved her grappling attack, so she’s not a one-trick pony by any means. Torres is also well conditioned and has been on the winning side of nine of 10 career decisions. This will be Torres’ second career fight in Florida.
This is going to be a fun fight between two of the better strawweights in the world and two females who are in good form overall. Torres has the advantage in athleticism and quickness, and she has to like her chances if she can take this fight the distance. Andrade is the aggressor with a powerful striking attack and would have the advantage if this fight goes to the canvas. Andrade also has a higher chance to finish the fight, which is dangerous for Torres considering all but one of her fights have ended in decisions. It’s tough to constantly win fights when you have limited ability to finish them, as you have to impress the unpredictable judges time and time again. Either way, I trust Andrade a little more to force the issue offensively and win this fight.
Give me the Brazilian.
