Fabricio Werdum and Alexander Volkov fight Saturday during UFC Fight Night 127 at The O2 Arena.
Fabricio Werdum enters this fight with a 23-7-1 record and has won 48 percent of his fights by submission. Werdum has won six of his last eight fights and is coming off a November win over Marcin Tybura. Werdum is averaging 3.65 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 51.7 percent. Werdum is averaging 1.59 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 30.7 percent. Werdum is coming off an impressive bout in which he landed 179 strikes and produced one takedown, winning a comfortable unanimous decision. Werdum now looks for three straight victories for the firs time since 2014-15. Despite quickly approaching 41 years old, Werdum is an accurate striker with some knockout power, but he’s a rare heavyweight who is most known for his grappling ability and ground game. Werdum has 11 career submission victories and has won countless medals in wresting and Jiu-Jitsu Championships. Werdum has finished five of his last eight victories and feels he always has the advantage if a fight goes to the canvas. Despite seven losses, Werdum has never been finished by submission. This will be Werdum’s sixth career fight in England.
USA TODAY Sports
Alexander Volkov enters this fight with a 29-6 record and has won 66 percent of his fights by knockout. Volkov has won his last five fights and is coming off a September win over Stefan Struve. Volkov is averaging 5.28 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 59.1 percent. Volkov is averaging 0.61 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 75 percent. Volkov is now 3-0 under the UFC banner, and is coming off a bout that earned him fight of the night honors. Volkov is a striker at heart who is most comfortable on the canvas and has 19 victories by knockout. Volkov has a reach of 80 inches, very heavy hands and has been deadly accurate with those strikes in his first three fights in the UFC. In his last fight against a big target, Volkov landed 144 strikes and produced two takedowns. Volkov is always looking to be active in the octagon and has a very successful ground and pound if things are ever taken to the canvas. Volkov’s last loss was about three years ago against Cheick Kongo. This will be Volkov’s first career fight in England.
Volkov has some advantages here considering he’s the bigger fighter, has the clear striking power advantage and he’s going to be confident given that he already has wins over proven veterans under his belt. The concern is that Volkov isn’t the most difficult fighter to takedown, which is where things completely shift in the favor of Werdum. If the Brazilian can get this fight where he wants it, force Volkov into the deep waters and wear him down, things are going to end well. Volkov has been able to get the best of strikers in his last few fights, but Werdum is a completely different animal and is somebody who usually forces his opponent to beat him at his own game. I’m not sure Volkov is capable of getting the job done here.
Give me Werdum for the victory.
