Mackenzie Dern and Amanda Cooper fight Saturday during UFC 224 at the Jeunesse Arena.
Mackenzie Dern enters this fight with a 6-0 record and has won 50 percent of her fights by submission. This will be Dern’s fifth fight since 2017 and is coming off a March win over Ashley Yoder. Dern is averaging 4.67 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 48.9 percent. Dern is averaging one takedown with an accuracy percentage of 16.6 percent. Dern will fight for the second time under the UFC banner, and it’s an extremely quick turnaround for the 25-year-old. Dern has a chance to climb up the rankings rather quickly, as she’s a proven grappler with a strong background in jiujitsu with numerous medals under her belt. Dern is deadly when she can dictate the pace of the fight and get things on the canvas, but she also landed 70 significant strikes in her UFC debut and was quite accurate, so her standup can’t be overlooked. This will be Dern’s first career fight in Brazil, her birthplace.
USA TODAY Sports
Amanda Cooper enters this fight with a 4-3 record and has won 50 percent of her fights by submission. Cooper has split her last six fights and is coming off a December win over Angela Magana. Cooper is averaging 3.7 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 44.3 percent. Cooper is averaging 1.42 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 42.8 percent. Cooper has been hit or miss in her MMA career, but she’s coming off an impressive knockout in which she landed 131 strikes and executed a takedown. Cooper is an aggressive fighter with a strong striking attack, can fight out of either stance and has produced three takedowns in four UFC fights. Cooper has a boxing background, so she probably wants a standup fight and should be confident with her striking ability. The obvious concern for Cooper is that all three of her losses have come by submission, so there are clearly holes with her ground game. This will be Cooper’s first career fight in Brazil.
Cooper is a physical striker who has the ability to make things interesting if she can prevent takedowns and get her standup fight. If Cooper lands a few punches and hurts Dern, there could be a serious upset here. However, Cooper has a limited ground game, and that’s not good when fighting a world class grappler with a strong takedown attack and a proven submission game. Dern should be able to control this fight and get the victory, and she’ll be even more motivated with it being her first MMA fight in her home country.
Dern remains unbeaten.
