Stephen Thompson and Darren Till fight Sunday during UFC Fight Night 130 at the Echo Arena.
Stephen Thompson enters this fight with a 14-2-1 record and has won 50 percent of his fights by knockout. Thompson has won six of his last eight fights and is coming off a November win over Jorge Masvidal. Thompson is averaging 3.81 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 44 percent. Thompson is averaging 0.48 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 50 percent. Thompson bounced back from his loss to Tyron Woodley with a convincing victory in which he landed 70 strikes and produced a knockdown in the second round. Thompson is a strong striker who works quickly, as three of his last six victories have ended in the first round. Thompson is a highly decorated kick boxer with long legs, but there’s power in those punches as well, making him highly effective with his standup attack. Thompson also has the cardio to be effective in later rounds, and he’s a tough fighter who has never been finished and has a high takedown defense. Thompson always feels he has the edge standing up, and he’s been taken down just twice in his last four fights. This will be Thompson’s first fight outside of Canada or the United States.

Darren Till enters this fight with a 16-0-1 record and has won 63 percent of his fights by knockout. Till has won five of his last six fights and is coming off a October win over Donald Cerrone. Till is averaging 3.18 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 52.3 percent. Till is averaging 0.8 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 33.3 percent. Till is coming off a fight round knockout victory that earned him performance of the night, and he’s now 4-0-1 under the UFC banner. Till is also a balanced fighter who relies on Muay Thai, accurate stand up striking and has an effective ground and pound. Till has extreme power in both hands, has an effective uppercut and can drop anybody in this division with one clean shot. Till got everyone’s attention when he walked down Cowboy, and at just 25 years old, he’s a title contender in the making if he can continue to stay in this form. This will be Till’s first career fight in England, his birthplace.
Thompson deserves to be the favorite given his longer track record, his IQ and his versatility that includes a polished kickboxing background. However, Till is a star in the making and is one of the best strikers you’re going to find at his age. Till uses distance well, picks his spots and when he lands, it’s curtains. We just saw Till walkthrough Cowboy without any issue, and while Cowboy is up there in age and not the same fighter he was years ago, that’s not something you see everyday. While Thompson has never been finished in his career, he’s got to be concerned heading into this fight. Not to mention this will be the first time Till fights in front of his home fans, which gives him an extra advantage, as having thousands of people on your side doesn’t hurt. Till is no joke and can win this fight.
Give me The Gorilla for the upset victory.
