Emily Ducote and Juliana Lima fight Thursday during Invicta FC 40 at the Memorial Hall.
Emily Ducote enters this fight with a 8-6 record and has won 50 percent of her fights by submission. Ducote has split her last 10 fights and is coming off a November loss to Kanako Murata. Ducote is coming off a tight split decision loss for the Invicta FC Strawweight Championship, a bout that snapped a two-fight winning streak and dropped her to 0-2 in title fights for her career. Ducote has a background in Muay Thai and BJJ, and she wants a fight on the ground where she can wrestle with her opponent, gain position and possibly end things with a submission. Three of Ducote’s eight crew victories have come via the rear-naked choke. Ducote is good fighting from her back and scrambles well to regain position. Ducote doesn’t have the best stand up in the world, but she does have some pop in her hands and did recently knock out Janaisa Morandin, so she’s a bit more than a one-trick pony. This will be Ducote’s fourth career fight in Kansas.
Juliana Lima enters this fight with a 10-6 record and has won 80 percent of her fights by decision. Lima has split her last 12 fights and is coming off a May loss to Brianna Van Buren. Lima is now 1-2 under the Invicta FC banner and has been out of the octagon for about 14 months. At now 38 years old, it’s going to be interesting to see what Lima has left in the tank and if the time away from the cage hurts her chances in terms of rust. Lima relies heavily on her BJJ and conditioning, as 13 of her 16 career fights have gone the distance. Lima is quite an athlete, aggressive with her takedowns and has an impressive ground and pound if she gains top position. While Lima is most known for his ground game and many would consider her a points fighter, she has some underrated stand up as well and her leg kicks can’t go ignored. This will be Lima’s first career fight in Kansas.
This price is a little surprising when you consider Lima is the bigger fighter and has a clear experience edge where she’s been battle tested. Lima has been in the octagon with Joanna Jędrzejczyk, Nina Ansaroff and Carla Esparza, and that resume alone makes her a fighter you cant overlook. With that said, there is a serious age gap between these two fighters and Ducote is probably in better form overall with much recent bouts under her belt. Lima has been out of the cage for a while and seems to be slowing down a bit. Ducote has the conditioning on her side along with the ground game to edge out a decision victory.
It won’t be pretty, but Ducote gets the job done.
