After a week off, we head to Texas for the O'Reilly Auto Parts 500, a race that debuted in 1997 and will be the first of two scheduled events this year at the Texas Motor Speedway. Ford has won this event 10 of 21 times, and this was one of the faster tracks last season with an average speed of 147.1. Let’s produce a victory this week.
Here are five drivers to consider throwing on this week’s card. (Odds weren’t released when this article was posted)
USA TODAY Sports
Joey Logano - Joey Logano has finished seventh or better in five of the first six races, and that should continue given his history on this track. Logan not only won this event back in 2014, but he’s finished fifth or better in each of his last five appearances. Logano has also finished seventh or better in seven of his last nine appearances at the Texas Motor Speedway overall. Logano clearly enjoys Texas and is a threat to win every time he takes this track, making him a must play this weekend.
Kyle Busch - Kyle Busch has finished third or better in each of his last four races, which is not only terrific and consistent form, but it also means he’s due to finally get a victory. Busch is a two-time winner of this event, winning it twice in the last five years, and he’s finished fifth or better in seven of his last 10 appearances at the Texas Motor Speedway overall. Busch has also won at least one event at this point in the season in four of the last six years, so that victory is coming sooner or later.
Jimmie Johnson - It seems like every week I say I’m done throwing Jimmie Johnson on my card, I find something that makes him a worthy consideration once again. To be clear, Johnson hasn’t shown us anything this season to make him a worthy bet. However, Johnson has won this event in two of the last three years and has finished eighth or better in nine of his last 10 appearances. To make it more interesting, Johnson has won six of his last 11 appearances at the Texas Motor Speedway. If there is one race that can get Johnson out of his funk, it’s this one.
Martin Truex Jr. - Martin Truex Jr. has been the most consistent driver for the last three or four months now and has history in Texas as well. Truex has finished in the top-10 in five of his last six tries at this event and has finished ninth or better in each of his last six appearances at the Texas Motor Speedway. It’s nice to see the history, but Truex has been driving so well week in and week out, you probably shouldn’t leave him off your card regardless.
Ryan Blaney - Ryan Blaney doesn’t have the same history in Texas as other guys on this list, but he has finished eighth or better in four of the six races this season and has top-10 finishes in seven of his last 11 races overall. Blaney is a driver in great form and somebody you can probably still get at a really good price. Blaney has also finished 12th or better in three of his six appearances at the Texas Motor Speedway, so it’s not like he bombs when he takes this track. Blaney is a guy to keep an eye on moving forward given his recent consistency.
