We make our first and only trip to Georgia for the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500, a race that debuted in 1960 and is another long one with this track being 1.54 miles. This early in the season and this long of a race, this is the time of year you can take advantage of some long shots with a lot of drivers still trying to figure things out and get in the swing of things.
Here are five drivers to consider throwing on this week’s card.
Clint Bowyer, +7900 - Clint Bowyer is off to a strong start this season with a sixth place finish in Daytona and a fifth place finish last week in Arizona. That alone makes Bowyer worth a look with these odds. Bowyer is also averaging a fourth place finish in his last two trips to Atlanta and has seven top-10 finishes at the Atlanta Motor Speedway overall. In terms of value, Bowyer is worth a shot in the dark with this insane price.
Jimmie Johnson, +2190 - We’ve crashed and burned with Jimmie Johnson many times these last few years, but there’s reason to consider throwing him on the card this week. Johnson is tied for the most victories ever at this race with four, and he’s driving a hot car at the moment, averaging an eighth place finish in his last three races. Johnson has finished fourth or better in five of his last 10 trips at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. This price is intriguing.
Kyle Busch, +580 - Kyle Busch is no stranger to fast starts to the season, and he’s knocking on that door early this year with a second place finish in Fontana and a third place finish last week in Arizona. Busch has finished seventh or better in five of his last seven trips in Atlanta, and he has countless wins at this track in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series. Busch has been kind to us over the years and there’s a good chance he cashes us another ticket.
Martin Truex Jr., +730 - Martin Truex Jr. is off to a very slow start this season, so this is a spot where we can get him with juicer odds. You won’t see Truex at these numbers once he starts to find his rhythm. Truex has finished 14th or worse through four races, but we know it’s only a matter of time before he breaks out of that slump. Truex has top-10 finishes in seven of his last eight trips to Atlanta, and that includes a runner-up finish last year. This is a good spot for a bounce back showing from the 26-time NASCAR Cup winner.
Denny Hamlin, +1990 - Denny Hamlin has a habit of winning Daytona and then falling off the wagon a little bit, and we’re seeing early signs of that again this year. With that said, we’re getting these odds with Hamlin, who has won this race before in 2012, with much better odds than some drivers who have zero success in Atlanta. Hamlin has seven top-10 finishes at the Atlanta Motor Speedway overall, which includes an average finish of 7.5 in his last two trips. This is another value play early in the season.
