The 2013-14 NBA season is still pretty far off, but there are usually plenty of noteworthy happenings occurring around the league at any given time. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the recent developments and try to get a feel for what they could mean in the upcoming season. Here’s the latest.

Brown Will Coach Sixers: News broke last night that former Spurs assistant Brett Brown has agreed to a four-year deal with the 76ers. It’s been quite a lengthy head coaching search for Philadelphia, who is in a complete rebuilding mode after a disappointing 34-48 season that made more headlines for Andrew Bynum’s injured knees than it did for on-court happenings.
Brown joins the 76ers after a successful run in San Antonio, serving as an assistant to Gregg Popovich since 2003. His mentorship history with Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker will serve him well when Nerlens Noel and Michael Carter-Williams begin their careers in Philly.

LeBron For President?: According to the man himself, LeBron James is considering running for the vacant position of president in the National Basketball Players Association. The union, James says, “isn’t in a good place right now,” and he believes he could serve to get things moving in the right direction.
If there’s dissention in the ranks, it likely stems at least in part from the 2011 CBA that saw the players surrendering sizable revenue to the owners. The presidency has also seen its share of scandal in recent months.
James’ decision should come sometime this month, and if he does end up running, Heat fans should probably start getting nervous. Serving as the president of the NBPA would be a significant time investment on an already busy schedule.

Pistons Off-Season Update: It’s been a very interesting--and very busy--off-season in Detroit thus far. The team added big-time free agents Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings to their roster, and some recent reports had them pursuing a possible signing of 34-year-old veteran Jason Collins in an effort to shore up their post defense and provide a safety net behind Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond. There’s still some question about how serious Detroit would be in a possible deal there, however, as concerns about Collins’ age and effectiveness have been raised.
The Pistons are coming off a 29-53 season in 2012, but they showed some flashes of brilliance from their youngsters. With their new additions in tow, things are looking up for the Motor City.
