After a breakout 2012-13 campaign, expectations are at an all time high for the Golden State Warriors this season. Although the potential was always there, things finally came together for Stephen Curry and the Warriors last season as they managed to win 47 games and secure their first playoff berth since the 2006-07 season, when they famously knocked off the number one seeded Dallas Mavericks in the opening round. Although Golden State eventually fell to San Antonio in the second round, there’s no doubting the future is bright in the Bar Area and it only got brighter in the summer as they managed to secure one of the prized free agents in Andre Iguodala, who will immediately become their best defender and key ball handlers.
While no one really expects much from the Los Angeles Lakers this season, they sure got off to a good start on Tuesday night against their cross-town rivals, running away with a comfortable 116-103 victory. In a back-and-forth contest, the underdog Lakers pulled away in the final term, outscoring the Clippers 41-24 behind an even spread of scorers. Xavier Henry led the way with 22 points off the bench while Pau Gasol added 15 points and 13 rebounds. In fact, the Lakers bench nearly doubled the scoring output of their starters 76-40.
As good as the Lakers were against the Clippers last night, I’m not over reacting to one game. Los Angeles shot nearly 50% from downtown (14-29) and got a whopping 76 points from their bench, which is probably going to be one of their strong suits when Kobe returns. They were still really bad defensively and I stand by my comment that they will be one of the five worst defensive teams in the league come seasons end. While you would be hard pressed to not take LA and the points after what they did last night, I think the over present more value here. This should be an up and down game with plenty of scoring, it’s that simple.
