Your not going to win to many games of basketball by scoring seven points in a quarter, as the Memphis Grizzlies found out in their season opener at San Antonio on Wednesday night. The Grizzlies actually led after the first term, but things went south quickly after as they managed just seven points in the second quarter, compared to the Spurs 30, which proved to be the difference in the game as they end up falling 101-94. Tony Allen led five Memphis players in double-digit scoring with 15 points on 6-8 shooting for a Grizzlies team that managed just 27 points in the first half, compared to 67 in the second.
The Detroit Pistons on the other hand had no trouble putting the ball in the basket in their opener, cruising to a 113-102 victory over the visiting Washington Wizards on Wednesday. Detroit used their superior size to their advantage, outscoring the Wizards 56-28 in the paint, led by Greg Monroe’s 24 points and 16 rebounds. Josh Smith, who was making his Pistons debut, was also a key factor as he added 19 points while Will Bynum added 19 of his own for a Detroit team that controlled the game from the opening tip-off.
I thought long and hard about taking the Pistons and the points in this one, but in the end I settled on the under. Yes Detroit scorched the nets against Washington in their first game, but don’t for a second think they are getting anywhere near 56 points in the paint against Marc Gasol and company. Memphis on the other hand is still a top three defensive team and while they did score 67 in the second half against the Spurs, the game was mostly over by half time. I think both teams will struggle to score in this one, mainly because the size both teams have down low and I would be surprised if they got around 95 points apiece...
