The Minnesota Timberwolves return home to face the slumping Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night.
Head to head, the 76ers are 3-8 ATS in the last 11 meetings and 1-5 ATS in the last 6 meetings in Minnesota while the home team is 5-2 ATS in the last 7 meetings and the underdog is 11-4-1 ATS in the last 16 meetings. The Timberwolves are 11-3-1 ATS in their last 15 games vs. a team with a winning % below .500, but just 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 games following a S.U. win and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The 76ers on the other 2-5 ATS in their last 7 road games, 1-7-1 ATS in their last 9 vs. NBA Northwest and 0-7 ATS in their last 7 games overall.

Just how bad have the Philadelphia 76ers been after their blistering start to the season? Well, they come into tonight’s game having dropped 11 of their last 13 and they have failed to cover the spread in each of their last seven contests. Defensively, they are easily the worst team in the league as they are giving up an average of 109.5 points per game and their offense has really slowed down recently with MCW out with an injury as they have failed to scored over 92 points in any of their past three games. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Timberwolves are coming off a huge 121-94 win in Detroit last night, but that was only their third win in their last 10 outings.
I’m torn what to take here, do I lay the points with Minnesota or take the under. Let’s have a look at why I think both have a chance to come in:
Minnesota -12: The Timberwolves have struggled of late, but they have played just a brutal schedule over the last two and a bit weeks. In their last nine games, they have faced the likes of Los Angeles (Clippers), Houston, Indiana, Denver, Dallas, Oklahoma City and Miami. They did however win their two games against sub .500 teams in Brooklyn and Detroit by 30 and 27 points, respectively. Philly has struggled on the road all season long and they have lost their last three in Charlotte, Detroit and Orlando by an average of 14.3 points per game. With MCW still out, I don’t see how they stick around in this one.
Under 209.5: Philly is a train wreck defensively and the Timberwolves can score as good as anyone in the league, but I like the under for two reasons here. One, the 76ers really struggle when MCW is not playing and their last three scoring outputs went like this – 88, 92 and 83. Their last two games against two of the fastest paced teams in the NBA in the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Clippers ended in totals of 195 and 177, respectively. Two, don’t forget about the possibility of the blowout factor. This game could be over at half time, in which both teams could clear their bench and scoring would be dramatically decreased, thus making the under a nice option. Kind of like when Minny hosted Brooklyn a couple of weeks back and the final score read 111-81.
Dan’s Pick: Minnesota -12
