The surprising Phoenix Suns look to bring in the New Year with a victory tonight as they play host the Memphis Grizzlies.
Head to head, the home team is 5-2-1 ATS in the last 8 meetings. The Suns are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 home games, 14-4-1 ATS in their last 19 games following a S.U. win and 22-7-1 ATS in their last 30 games overall. The Grizzlies on the other hand are 2-5-1 ATS in their last 8 road games vs. a team with a winning home record, 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
How impressive is this young Phoenix Suns squad! Their over/under wins total at the start of the season sat at around 20 games and they have nearly surpassed that after just 30 games. The Suns have beaten some pretty good teams this season but none may be better than their 107-88 win over the Los Angeles Clippers to end the year, just dominating from start to finish. What's even more impressive are their against the spread stats as they have have covered the number in 10 of 15 home games and 12 of 15 on the road, truly exceptional numbers. They continue to go under the radar and we continue to bet on them.
It's been a rough couple of months for the Memphis Grizzles who come into tonight's game having only won 13 of their first 30 games of the season. The Grizz are coming off a 95-91 home loss to the Chicago Bulls on Monday night, but they have won three of five as they wait for Marc Gasol to make his much needed comeback. Memphis has kind of been the anti-Suns when it comes to betting as they have covered the spread in just 10 of their 30 games this season.
It has to be noted that Memphis does own a 110-91 home win over Phoenix that took place at the start of December. What's more surprising, the Grizzlies still outscored the visitors 56-36 in paint points despite both Gasol and Zach Randolph out of the line-up through injury.
Despite their previous encounter, I can't look past the Suns in this one. Phoenix is averaging a whopping 111.4 points per game over their last 10 at home and I just don't see how the Grizzlies keep up here. Sure they have the advantage down low, but that hasn't meant much to them this season and you can't ignore the fact that you have one of the premier against the spread teams coming up against one of the very worst in the league. Look for Phoenix to get some payback tonight...
