The Cleveland Cavaliers return home to face Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks on Martin Luther King day.
The Cavaliers are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 home games and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 game vs. a team with a winning S.U. record, but just 2-5 ATS in their last 7 home games following a road trip of 7 or more days. The Mavericks on the other hand are 22-6 ATS in their last 28 games following a SU loss of more than 10 points, 17-6 ATS in their last 23 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400 and 38-15 ATS in their last 53 road games.

The Cleveland Cavaliers still have a ways to go, but they finally starting to play some good basketball. The Cavs are coming off a five-game Western Conference road trip in which they went 3-2 and closed out the trip on Friday with one of their best wins of the season in Denver, defeating the surging Nuggets 117-109. Cleveland offense has taken off since the arrival of Luol Deng a couple of weeks back as they have average 106 points over their last six contest. If you take the game in Sacramento away, in which they scored just 80 points, that average suddenly jumps up to 111.4, which is 15 points more than their season average.
The Dallas Mavericks have been a bit up and down lately, but this team is a covering machine when coming off a loss and more importantly, when they play away from home. The Mavs are 38-17 against the spread in their last 55 games following a loss and 22-6 ATS in their last 28 off a loss double-digit loss (fell at home to Portland 127-111). Dallas has also covered the spread in 38 of their last 53 road games dating back to last season. The Mavs haven’t been straight up either, winning six of their last eight matches away from home.
You could make a pretty strong case for the Cavs here considering they are playing good basketball at the moment and they have covered in five straight home games. Yet, they are coming back from a long road trip, a spot where they have previously struggled, covering in just two of their last seven when coming back from a long trip. Meanwhile, the Mavs have won six of their last eight away from home and are coming off one of their worst losses of the season on Saturday to the visiting Trail Blazers.
Given Dallas’ against the spread stats on the road and coming off a loss and the fact that teams always struggle in their first game back from a road trip, the Mavs are my play in this one...
Dan’s Pick: Dallas +1.5
