NBA Injury Updates 1/27: Two Kings, Vucevic and More
January 27, 2014
We’re coming off a pretty active weekend in the NBA, which makes this morning a good time to check in on some of the injury concerns out there. We’ve got plenty of notable players ailing right now, and their prognoses are widely varied as usual. Here’s a closer look at what we know on some of the key names out there.
Jeff Teague, PG, Atlanta Hawks: After hurting his ankle against the Spurs on Friday, Teague had a weekend filled with ups and downs. First off, he was ruled out for the team’s two-game road trip, including games Saturday in Milwaukee and tonight in Oklahoma City. The good news is that the X-rays performed on his ankle were negative, so there’s no structural damage there--which is very good news to the depleted Hawks backcourt.
We don’t have a concrete return date on Teague just yet, but may get a small update today before the team takes the floor. His earliest chance at a return would be Wednesday against the Pistons.

Rudy Gay, SF/PF, Sacramento Kings: Here’s the good news on Gay: He’s traveling with the team to Utah. Beyond that, however, his status is in a holding pattern until closer to game-time. There remains a possibility that he could rejoin the lineup against the Jazz, but also an equally probable chance he’ll sit again.
Gay has missed two consecutive games with an Achilles injury. He may end up being a game-time decision.
DeMarcus Cousins: PF/C, Sacramento Kings: In addition to Gay, the Kings have some other major injury concerns to deal with. Cousins, namely, has been fighting off a sprained left ankle which has cost him the past two games.
It looks like the big man will be missing a third outing as well: He’s not traveling with the team for tonight’s game. The next chance Cousins has to get back into the lineup is Wednesday against the Grizzlies. We’ll have to see how he’s doing by then.
Kirk Hinrich, PG/SG, Chicago Bulls: As expected, Hinrich missed the Bulls’ last appearance in Charlotte on Saturday. He’s been nursing a pulled hamstring and has been held out the last three games because of it.
The good news for the Bulls is that they have D.J. Augustin to pick up the slack, and he’s been cruising lately. We’ll have to wait until a little closer to game-time to see if Hinrich is able to play tonight at home against Minnesota, but if not, it shouldn’t be a super-big deal thanks to the unexpected depth. Chicago leaves for a road trip on Wednesday.
Nikola Vucevic, PF/C, Orlando Magic: We’ve got a bit of an encouraging update on Vucevic today. He’s joining the team on their current three-game road trip, which began yesterday in New Orleans.
Vucevic has been out since Jan. 6 with a concussion and hasn’t been able to make his way back to the floor. The odds are against him returning on this current trip, but it’s good to see him making enough progress to at least tag along.
