Not sure what the NBA was thinking giving us an Orlando Magic-Boston Celtics matchup before the Super Bowl, but hey, it gives us an opportunity to make some money before the big boy game comes on.
Both teams are clearly tanking for the NBA draft lottery, as they lost a combined 29 games in the month of January. Both have a losing record against the spread and they’re a combined 3-7 against the number in their last 10 games.

Maybe we should just keep our lunch money for the NFL game, huh?
In all seriousness, Boston hasn’t had a kind schedule as of late, playing Oklahoma City, Brooklyn and New York in three of its last four games. Meanwhile, Orlando has played some of the more inconsistent teams such as New Orleans, Detroit and Toronto and is still getting blown out. So, it’s tough to look at recent numbers and really get a good feel for anything.
We do know that Orlando is one of the worst defensive teams in the league, allowing 102.1 points a game. Boston still prides itself on defense and is holding teams to 98.9 points per game. Even in the Celtics last five games, they’ve held teams to 34.7 percent from beyond the arc. That’s pretty good considering the competition.
I think it goes without saying that Boston is the slightly better team and should get a boost with Rajon Rondo back in the lineup. He’s expected to see the most minutes he’s seen all season, as he continues to bounce back from injury. Also, Boston hasn’t played a game since Wednesday, while Orlando just played on Friday and is now traveling.
The Magic are 1-5 against the spread in their last six games against Boston and are 3-21 against the spread on the road.
Give me the well-rested home team for the medium sized chalk.
