The Portland Trailblazers and the Phoenix Suns face off on Friday in a battle of NBA Western Conference playoff hopefuls.
The Portland Trailblazers are in fifth position in the NBA Western Conference playoff standings but they haven’t sewn up anything as of yet. The Trailblazers are 27-9 at home this season, are 6-4 in their last 10 games, and have won four games in a row. La Marcus Aldrige leads Portland averaging 23.3 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. Damian Lillard is averaging 21.1 points and 5,6 assists, Wesley Mathews is averaging 16.3 points, and Nicolas Batum is averaging 13 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 5.1 assists. The Blazers are averaging 106.8 points and they are shooting 44.9 percent including 35.5 percent from beyond the three-point arc while defensively they are allowing 102.7 points and their opponents are shooting 45.5 percent. Portland seems to be in a spot where they have a lot more to lose than they do to gain in this one.

The Phoenix Suns sit in ninth place in the Western Conference playoff standings though they are in a virtual tie with the Mavericks and the Grizzlies. The Suns are 19-17 on the road this season and 7-3 in their last 10 games after losing their last two. Goran Dragic leads Phoenix averaging 20.4 points and 6.0 assists per game. Eric Bledsoe is averaging 17.3 points and 5.6 assists, Gerald Green is averaging 15.5 points, and Markieff Morris is averaging 13.8 points and 6.0 rebounds. The Suns are averaging 105.4 points and they are shooting 46.2 percent including 37.3 percent from beyond the three point arc while defensively they are allowing 102.8 points and their opponents are shooting 45.5 percent. Every game from here on in looks like a must win game for the Suns.
Portland is 4-0 against the spread in their last four games, 4-1 against the spread in their last five home games, and 0-5 against the spread playing on two days rest. Phoenix is 26-10 against the spread in their last 36 road games, 5-2 against the spread following a loss, and 5-2 against the spread against a team with a winning record. The home team has covered the point spread in seven of the last 10 meetings of these two.
Portland is favored as they should be but it looks to be a shade too high for comfort to me and I will take the Suns and the points with Phoenix’s backs to the wall.
