The San Antonio Spurs host the Dallas Mavericks in Game 1 of the NBA playoffs.
Head to head, the Mavericks are 5-15-1 ATS in the last 21 meetings and 2-5 ATS in the last 7 meetings in San Antonio while the road team is 6-1 ATS in the last 7 meetings. The Spurs are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 Conference Quarterfinals games, 8-2 ATS in their last 10 home games and 15-5 ATS in their last 20 games overall. The Mavericks on the other hand are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games playing on 3 or more days rest, 47-19 ATS in their last 66 road games and 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 Conference Quarterfinals games.
While there's no doubt that the Dallas Mavericks are a pretty formidable opponent, but things have worked out well for the San Antonio Spurs. Having won 62 games in the regular season, the Spurs nearly faced the prospect of having to contend the Memphis Grizzlies in the opening round of the playoffs, a team that knocked them out of postseason action a couple of years ago. Instead, they come up against a Dallas team that they have beaten on nine straight occasions, while covering the spread in seven of those contests.
While the Mavs have had a tough time with the Spurs in recent history, they are the best team in the NBA when it comes to covering the spread on the road as they are a remarkable 47-19 ATS in their last 66 away from home. Nine points is a lot of give this feisty Dallas squad, so I would lean with them If I were picking a side. Instead, I'm going with a total.
If you know me, you know I like taking the over and that's exactly what I'm doing here. The total is set at 205.5 for today's game, which I thought was pretty low considering they have gone over that in four of their last six meetings. Also, their last two showdowns this season resulted in totals of 218 and 209 points. While things slow down in the playoffs, I can see this one being a high scoring battle...
Dan’s Pick: Over 205.5
