NBA Player Updates 6/17: Cavaliers, Anthony's Future, Off-Season Schedule and More
June 17, 2014
Now that the NBA off-season is officially here, we’re looking at a long summer of rumor, speculation and ultimately activity as we gear up for the 2014-15 campaign. That said, let’s take our daily look around the league and check out some of the notable happenings out there.
Carmelo’s Next Move: It’s only been a little over three years since the blockbuster trade that sent Carmelo Anthony to the New York Knicks, and we just may have seen the last of that particular situation. All this week, rumors have been swirling surrounding Anthony, who will reportedly be opting out of his contract by the deadline on June 23--less than a week away. He’ll be the major prize in the 2014 free agent bonanza (unless LeBron does something somewhat unexpected), and he’ll have no shortage of suitors begging for his services.
Word is that Anthony is leaning toward leaving New York. His reasons supposedly include the fact that he wants to win a championship now, and with the Knicks mired in another rebuilding mode and hamstrung by financial limitations and bloated contracts on the book, the team isn’t anywhere near an NBA title right now.
Teams like the Bulls, Rockets and Mavericks have already emerged as players in the Carmelo Sweepstakes, but the most interesting potential move would be a trip to South Beach to join James, Wade and Bosh. We doubt that will happen--there are simply too many salary considerations to make it work--but Heat fans can dream.
There’s still a chance that Anthony could stick it out in the Big Apple--at least for another year--to test the waters under new head coach Derek Fisher and new president Phil Jackson, but from all the indications we’re getting, he’s probably gone. Needless to say, the next week or so will be filled with speculation and it should prove to be an interesting saga as the off-season rolls on.

Cavs to Interview Blatt: Earlier this week, we learned that Cleveland would be interviewing former Maccabi Tel Aviv coach David Blatt for their vacant head coaching position, and that meeting will be taking place tomorrow.
The 55-year-old coach reportedly has some options to consider. There are rumors that he may take a job as an assistant under Steve Kerr’s regime with the Warriors if the Cavaliers job doesn’t materialize.
Blatt certainly has competition for the Cleveland position. The team has been in contact with no less than 12 potential head coaches, and they appear to have narrowed the field down to Blatt and at least a couple of others.
The Cavs will more than likely have their next coach in place by June 26 (the draft), whomever that turns out to be.
NBA 2014 Off-Season Schedule: It’ll be a long off-season, but we’ll have plenty of happenings (and rumors) around the league to keep us busy. The major events this summer will be the NBA Draft and the free agency period, so let’s check out the dates on those and a few others.
June 26: NBA Draft
July 1: Teams can officially begin negotiating with free agents
July 10: Players can begin signing contracts
October 4: Pre-season begins
October 28: First game of the 2014-15 season
April 18, 2015: Playoffs begin
